We are here to protest the unlawful detention of former Taiwanese President Chen Shui-bian by the KMT regime in Taiwan.
Mr. Chen is convicted of corruption by the KMT-controlled court in Taiwan and is now serving a 19 years of sentence in a tiny cell, in solitary confinement. All the charges against Mr. Chen are now proven to be bogus and baseless. The whole trial is full of irregularities, witness tampering, and the collusion between certain media and the court. In short, it is a show trial done in a kangaroo court. Despite of this fact, Mr. Chen remains incarcerated.
Currently in solitary confinement for over three years, Mr. Chen’s health is failing. Recently he was found to have heart and prostate problems. Friends and family members also noticed the change in his mentation as his memory starts to deteriorate. Despite pleas from Chen’s family and numerous social groups for Chen’s medical leave, the prison authority and KMT will not grant him medical leave. In addition, Chen’s family found out Chen had been put on certain medication for over a year without his consent. The long term effect of this is still uncertain.
Prior to become Taiwanese President in 2000, Mr. Chen was a famous human rights lawyer in Taiwan. During his presidency (2000-2008) he was the recipient of the 35th annual International Human Rights Award given by the International League for Human Rights in New York on October 31, 2003. Ever since he stepped down as the President of Taiwan in 2008, he has been persecuted by the KMT using all kind of dirty tactics because Mr. Chen “played a key role in Taiwan's movement from an authoritarian state to a modern, pluralistic democracy." (said then International League of Human Rights President Scott Horton). Also because Mr. Chen, like the DPP to which he belongs, advocates for Taiwan’s independence. While KMT has close ties with Communist China and seeks eventual unification with China. Now Mr. Chen is in prison for no reason, and his human rights severely ignored. His plight needs to be known and his suffering needs to be addressed. It is time for the international community to pressure KMT for Mr. Chen’s immediate release.
