I know you have been following the ongoing of Taiwan's election, especially the election of Taipei city mayor. Recently, people raise an issue about Dr. Ko's publication regarding organs harvesting from non-heart-beating donor. I have pulled the paper " Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation; kidney transplantation; non-heart-beating donor. Clinical transplantation, Vol 14, issue 2, p.152-156, April, 2000. Wen-Je Ko, Yih-Sharng Chen, Pi-Ru Tsai, Po-Huang Lee".
It is really concerning the way the organs were harvest. The paper read" After ventilator disconnection in NHBD, phentolamine and heparin were injected and mannitol infusion was given. After the donor's asystole was confirmed by the electrocardiogram(EKG) strip recording, the ECMO support was set up through the right femoral veno-arterial route, .....".
So apparently, when the phentolamine and heparin were injected, the patients were still alive, although they were very ill and dying.
Although the family already gave up their hope and they already signed consent for organ donation, it does not mean that they agreed that the doctors could give medication to make their love ones' heart stop beating, so the doctors could proceed to organ harvesting.
What more concerning is that people seem continue to make excuses for Dr. Ko regardless. People seem abandon all the principles and just want to win the election. But if we do that, are we still on the righteous side? I think people should be aware and think about the organ-harvesting issue very carefully and make sure that they vote according their conscience.
