A Letter To President Trump

May 24, 2019

The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW
Washington, DC 20500

Dear President Trump:

We, the Taiwanese Americans, are very concerned about the news from Taiwan recently. President Tsai wants to block the strong challenger, Mr. William Lai, to become the candidate of her own party, i.e., the Democratic Progressive Party (the “DPP”), in the 2020 presidential election, because her rating in the polls has been trailing Lai in a significant margin. She and a small group around her tightly control the DPP, and have continued the primary process three times, and also tried to change the primary rules, after Lai had officially entered into the race according to the established rules of the DPP Primary. Most likely, she would have the primary process postponed further, the primary rules changed, or even the primary eliminated. Tsai’s behaviors are totally barbarian and unacceptable. The rules and time table of the primary should not be changed after the race starts.

Even worse, on April 22, the most popular TV political commentary program, Dennis and Amanda Show (政經看民視), was closed amid of broadcasting by the new management of Formosa TV (民視). About a month earlier, the Chairman was abruptly removed without much explanation, by the new Board of Directors of Formosa TV. Around the time, a certain board member was called to the office of President. The new Board was indeed acting as the proxy of President Tsai. The legality of the removal of the chairman is questionable. The close-down of Dennis and Amanda Show had the effect of silencing the media in criticizing President Tsai’s performance for the past 3 years. After the incident, all the famous TV commentators who had criticized Tsai, disappeared from all the TV political commentary programs.

The freedom of press and freedom of speech are severely curtailed by President Tsai in such a barbarian manner that Taiwanese roar with anger everywhere on the island. The news shocked the Taiwanese within and without. The overseas Taiwanese of the world jointly condemn President Tsai’s undemocratic behaviors.

The 2020 presidential election in Taiwan was set to be a struggle between democracy and dictatorship by most observers. The DPP was supposed to represent democratic principle, while Kuomintang (the “KMT”) wants to work with the Chinese Communist Party. Tsai’s undemocratic behaviors muddle the theme of the 2020 general election, and reduce the alertness of the Taiwanese voters.

While the US and its allies are waging war against the Chinese totalitarian regime in several areas, Taiwan is in such a strategic location and importance that it could have significant impact. We urge you not only to pay close attention to the developments in Taiwan, but also to take actions as you see proper.

Most respectfully yours,

Stanley Hsiao
